Lately, the IB fam has been listening to a lot of Michael Jackson.
Here is the story about how this came to be:
It all started when Mommy (Mary K.) brought home a DVD of Michael Jackson music videos. All the kids were mystified. "A DVD!" hollered Will as he sighted it in the bottom of the bag. He dove for it and then said "Oh." He was very confused "what is it, Mommy?" he asked apprehensively. He had been expecting something exciting, and he wasn't going to say this to Mommy, but he didn't know about it, and it wasn't a movie, so... Mommy looked very excited. "That" she said "is a DVD of Michael Jackson music videos. He is a very talented, pretty interesting and rather odd artist, who..." "Oh! Is he they guy who did all the weird things to his face?" Will interrupted. "Yes!" Mommy seemed pleaesed that the kids knew who he was. By this time, the wrapping on the DVD was completely undone and Will was pretty fired up about the idea of having some music videos, especially something he didn't know about. "Wow! Can we watch some now?" he asked. "Sure!" was the reply from everyone. So we did. First, we watched Beat It. Everyone loved it immediately. It was so captivating that we couldn't help it, and even if we could have, we would still have loved it. Then we watched Bad. Will and Kathleen were especially fond of that one. I (Mignon), was a little taken aback because of all the hollering and weird costumes, and I liked Beat It better, but I liked Bad as well. Forrest was bouncing off the walls with excitement. He had never seen a music video before, and the whole idea was so cool and new to him that he couldn't help jumping everywhere so no-one could see what was going on in the video. Mary K. was very excited too. This was the first contact we had had with Michael Jackson, and she had told us a bit about him, but the only times we had heard of his music was through Weird Al, with his Parodies of Beat It and Bad (Eat It and Fat), so it was pleasing to her that we liked him. We then watched Thriller. It scared Fobie (and so we weren't able to see it again until Will convinced him that it was funny). I loved it just because of the fun idea of it, and Will was in DVD mode which means he loved it all and everyone as long as we were watching a DVD) and so he was having the time of his life.
We decided then to save a few of the videos for later and put them up, but by then we were all hooked. It's so funny in our house how the littlest taste of something can make it our favorite thing in the world for either a few minutes or a few years. Martin was at the California home-base when we got the music videos, so when he got back to Austin, we were all big Michael Jackson fans. By now, we have decided on our all-time favorite Michael Jackson music video (Black Or White), our personal favorite songs and our personal favorite CDs. We own 7 Michael Jackson CDs (plus the music videos and The Best Of The Jackson Five), and a day doesn't go by that we don't listen to one of those (Dangerous, Off The Wall, Thriller, Bad, Blood On The Dance Floor The Best of Michael Jackson & Michael Jackson Number Ones [which holds a ridiculous 18 songs and is missing a few number ones at that]).
Gradually, we've discovered how few people we can talk to about him. Most people turn the cold shoulder at the mere mention of him. Most people are scared of him because of his differences that are probably the same differences many people we know have from us, we just don't notice them as much because he's famous, and maybe his are more eggagerated. We don't know, but we do know that we love his music and want other people to, as well. None of us can agree on our all-time favorite family songs, so I'll just put down the person, their favorite songs, and the CDs the songs are on.
