Newsies

Mary K. taught a musical called Newsies at Zachary Scott Theatre!

Newsies is a fun-filled musical about the newsie's strike in New York City in 1899.

The story:

Before the war, the newspapers sold the papers to 'newsies', their 'delivery kids', at 50 cents for a hundred papers.  The kids bought the 'papes' and then sold them for a penny per paper.  When the war came, the papers raised their prices to 6o cents a hundred.   The newsies didn't mind.  The news was so good that they got all the money they'd spent back extremely fast.  Life was good. They didn't even have problems with having to eat the papers they didn't sell if they didn't make any money.  Besides, hey, the papers would lower the price once the war was over and the headlines weren't as good.  Well, that's what they thought, but it didn't happen that way.  The newsies were furious.  They were mad enough already, but when they found out that one of the people selling them the newspapers was cheating them, they'd had enough.  They pushed the guy's paper cart over and ran him out of town.  They organized the strike overnight.  It was enormous.  It lowered the big paper's production rates by 80%.  Plus, the public was with the newsies.  The newsies put up signs by the newspaper stands saying things like "don't buy the 'Sun'."  Generally, even before the strike, most of the money that the newsies earned was off of the tips given to them by the people who bought their papers and, still, even though the people didn't get any papers from them, they still gave them the tips that they would have had they gotten the paper.  The strike finally grew to be so big that the newspaper owners couldn't stand it anymore.  They gave in.  They didn't lower the price, but they made it so that the newsies could return the papers they didn't sell for the same amount that they paid for them.  The newsies had won.  Later on, several other

The play:

The play is slightly different from the original story in just a few details that make it easierto convey, faster and more understandably for the audience.  In the play, the newsies actually do wind up making the newspaper people lower the prices.  The script that was located by the theatre was actually the Disney script for the movie.

How the Zach Scott classes work:

Many homeschooled kids take the classes at Zachary Scott Theatre that are especially for them.   I don't know how the classes that schooled kids can take work, so you'll just have to settle for info on the homeschooled.  Kids sign up at the beginning of a semester to be part of a play with other kids and a specific director.  The plays are chosen for you, and throughout the semester you learn how to follow stage directions, give your own input, heighten your acting talent and your ability to work peacefully with other kids.
